Hello there! I am the JK/SK Music, Drama/Dance and Library teacher for Mme. Burnham's, Mme. King's, Mme. Chapman's, M. Thompson's and Mlle. Dispiter's class for both groups.
I also teach Mme. Alcaraz's Gr. 2/3 class, Mme. Marchuk's Gr. 3 class and Mme. O'Brien's Gr. 5/6 class once a cycle.
I would like to tell you about myself. I graduated from the Honours Music Education Program from the University of Western Ontario and after Althouse Teacher's College, I finished my Diploma in Fine Arts specializing in the Kodaly method of teaching music to children at the University of Calgary in Alberta and an Early Childhood Music Education and Orff course at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, ON. I then took my Honours Specialist in Music in Toronto as well as my Instrumental qualifications. I am back teaching music after teaching Core French and I am very honoured to build the music program.
The Arts
For the Arts, I am introducing to the children a variety of songs that are familiar in English and teaching them the words in French. They are responding and moving to music and I am emphasizing the steady beat and rhythm of music. They are learning some singing games, fingerplays and dances as well and incorporating these in the music and dance/drama programme. We are singing a variety of simple songs and will be introducing rhythm instruments and will be learning to identify some instruments by sight and sound that are in the orchestra. The children are developing their ability to hear, identify and perform loud/soft, fast/slow, and high and low sounds and feelings in music and are moving to the tempo and mood of music. In each term, we will either dramatize stories, songs and folk tales and work on gross motor movements and spatial awareness and facial expressions. For the primary and junior classes, we are also learning and developing musical skills through singing games and folk songs. I am looking forward to working with all of the children this year.
Library
We will soon be borrowing a book from the TVA library. We are presently teaching the students to learn how to walk to and from the library, how to use the library properly and read quietly in our Quiet room using the beanbag chairs. We also are learning how to hold a book properly by turning the pages correctly and how to put library books back into the bin and sharing books with others. Since they are developing these important routines, we will be gradually allowing them to use the books on the Easy (E) shelves. Please reinforce this at home on how to put back books properly and the etiquette used in the library and encourage your child to borrow books from the public library. Our first priority is for our TVA children to learn the love of reading. Please make sure your child returns their borrowed book when the next day they come back to school. As well, continue to read to your child at home so we can work together build correct habits with books.
